TAIPEI INTERNATIONAL FLORA EXPOSITION

Opening hours: 9:00am-22:00pm
Official website: http://www.2010taipeiexpo.tw/MP_4.html

LOCATION

Taiwan's total land area is only about 36,000 square kilometers (14,400 square miles). It is shaped like a yam that is narrow at both ends. It lies off the south-eastern coast of mainland Asia, across the Taiwan Strait from Mainland China. To the north lies Japan; to the south is the Philippines, it is a beautiful island on the western edge of the Pacific Ocean. Taipei, located in northern Taiwan, has a population of 2.6 million. The city of Taipei consists of modern and traditional cultures with a generous dash of energy and friendly smile.

The cultural kaleidoscope of Taipei pulses wherever you go. Incense-veiled temples dating back to dynastic times blend seamlessly with a neoned street life of a decidedly more modern era. Taipei has dozens of world-class restaurants where gourmets can sample the best regional Chinese cuisine; and for the gourmand, there are plenty of night markets serving up scrumptious evening snacks in an environment of chaotic excitement and fun.

The polarities of Taipei are vividly present as well in the joining of the urban and natural. Just a few minutes from the heart of the city you can soak away the cares of the world in mineral-rich hot springs nestled in the lush mountain foothills ringing the Taipei Basin. And throughout the city there are plenty of trails, parks and other oases of tranquility to lift and invigorate your spirits.

WEATHER

Taiwan has a great variety of climates. The most agreeable weather is in autumn, especially October and November. In winter, the west side of the mountains tends to be drier than the east side. Southern winters are the best: warm and dry. Summers are hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms in the north. The mountains are the island’s rainiest region, particularly in summer when the rains fall in short thundershowers, especially in the mid afternoon. June to October is the typhoon season in Taiwan. The months with the most rainy days are in plum rain season in May and June while thundershower mostly comes in the afternoons in summer. Daily temperatures in Taipei can be about 35℃ (95℉) in summer but rarely go below 12℃ (53.6℉) in winter.

In April, the average temperature in northern Taiwan (Taipei) is 22℃ (72℉), and southern Taiwan (Kaohsiung) is 25℃ (77℉). The average rainfall is 150 mm in the north and middle of Taiwan, and 70 mm in southern Taiwan.

TRANSPORTATION IN TAIPEI

MRT/Subway The MRT metro system is the easiest way to get around in Taipei. Clean and air-conditioned trains arrive every five minutes. To keep the transit system clean, smoking, eating and drinking are strictly prohibited. The well-maintained transit system is well-loved by office workers, students and tourists.

Taking the Taxi - Taxis in Taiwan are well-marked yellow vehicles easily recognized by the traveler. Most taxis in Taiwan are equipped with a meter and passengers are charged an initial fee plus a surcharge for each 300 meters traveled. The initial flat rate fee is about NT$ 70 for the first 1.5 km (about 0.9 miles), then a distance surcharge of NT$ 5 per 300 meters (about 328 yards) is applied. An extra fee, equivalent to 20 percent of the total price, is applied for night service (from 23:00 to 06:00).
Only a few of taxi drivers speak English and communicate well with foreign travelers. It is better to present a map or the correct address of your destination written in Chinese. Furthermore, most of the information centers in the hotels and even the convenient stores can provide a service to call a taxi. Toll Free Taxi Hotline is helpful: such as 0800-055850.
